Friday Fictioneers

“We have vanilla, chocolate, or coffee flavours today,” said the waitress to Martha.

Martha was at the café with two friends, Joan and Harriet who were both hard of hearing. She attempted to relay the various ice creams on offer whilst the waitress patiently awaited a decision.

“Oh, lovely,” said Joan "I'll have toffee today.”

“The same for me,” said Harriet,” I like toffee ice cream"

"No ladies, C for coffee, not T for toffee!" shouted Martha. “Have coffee flavour.”

"No, perhaps I won't have toffee,” said Joan, “I think I'll have raspberry for a change"

“Good choice Joan, I’ll have strawberry too,” said Harriet.

Oh dear!

Thanks to Rochelle at Friday Fictioneers for hosting, and Roger Bultot for the photo. Such diners are very rare in the UK and at first glance, I thought it was the food counter on a train!

  2. Dear Keith,

Would you care for a hearing aid to go with that ice cream? Cute story.

    Shalom,

  7. This cafe isn't located in Amble Bay, is it?? :) Thank you for adding a smile to my day! My grandmother was hard of hearing, a very soft-spoken lady surrounded by people speaking to her at the top of their voices. Your post reminded me of her.

  9. This is no laughing matter, my friend. I have Joan and Harriet in my family and I know exactly how Martha felt ;-)

  12. Being hard of hearing is bad enough, having to deal with others who are is occasionally maddening!

On another note, i wish many, many happy returns of the day to your mother!

  16. Ha! This one really hit close to home for me Keith. One of my eardrums has a hole in it and my hearing is terrible (hopefully, it will be repair in the next few months). As a result, my word recognition is terrible and I often misunderstand what people are saying. It helps to laugh about it. :)

    1. My immediate thought was I'd offended you, but your comment ended with a smile. Phew! I wish your ear well. I SAID......

  17. My sympathies to the trio. I'm hard of hearing myself --- wear two hearing aids, in fact --- and still miss a lot. Sometimes a group of young teens sings a song in church and I've only understood a few words of it! Bashful people often don't articulate, and men have such low voices, including my husband. Most older women I can understand quite well because their voices have gotten shrill over the years.

    1. Oh gosh! I hope my tale didn't offend you! Actually my Mum's a bit hard of hearing. If she doesn't hear me I say it again louder and she tells me off for shouting! Can't win!

  18. My sympathies to the poor waitress! Wonder if their eyesight is better and she can write down the flavours? :D

  19. Ha, ha. The ladies probably have hearing aids they don't like or that need new batteries. I had a great aunt who preferred to read lips and was good at it. Good writing, especially the dialogue, Keith. :) --- Suzanne

  23. Ha.. but maybe the flavor is OK unless you say garlic.

  24. Well, they need their flavours written on a board then there would be no confusion at all! Nice tale Keith
