Friday Fictioneers

Posted February 18

This week's picture comes courtesy of Sandra Crook. Rochelle hosts as ever.

As usual, his alarm rang at 07.45.

Harry was a creature of habit. He went down the stairs, plucked his newspaper from the letterbox, and walked to the kitchen. Put bread in the toaster, water in the kettle, tea leaves in the pot. Cracked an egg into simmering water and flipped over his timer. Sat down and scanned the crossword clues.

He liked his breakfast at 08.10.

His cleaner arrived a11.45 precisely. She found the bread standing to attention half toasted, the egg part-cooked, the kettle lukewarm. The sand in the egg timer had stopped flowing halfwayHarry was slumped in his chair.

And the clock had stopped at 08.08

  2. Seems a very fitting end for one so precise. I'm rather pleased for Harry - non fuss, neat, clean and pragmatic. ;)

  9. Great writing, Keith. I found this fitting that everything was in a state of noncompletion, simply because he wasn't there to finish it. Well done.

  10. Amy took the words right off my keyboard (and said it better than I could). I too loved how the timers just stopped when he died. Discipline right into death. Wonderful tale.

  12. Black humor and a bit scary. Time stopped and stayed stopped when he died. I think I'd stay out of that house until an investigation was made. It's a bit like visiting the "Twilight Zone". I've probably seen too many weird TV shows. :) --- Suzanne

  13. You have such a gift for capturing a moment in time. In this case, it's quite literal! Well done.
