Keith's Ramblings - nine years old today!

...and this is my 1200th post. My first  was called Lucky Dip. It got just 10 hits and no comments! It's still HERE!

The Market

The lone word at this week's  Sunday Scribblings 2 is Market'

The Saturday market was in full swing. Stalls heaving with fruit, local meat and freshly baked bread. A brass band played tiddly-om-pom-pom. Here ice creams, there sizzling burgers. The smells, the sounds, the colours.

I came across a crooked little tent. I looked through the entrance. ‘Enter’ said a voice from the darkness within. I entered. ‘Sit’ groaned the voice. I fumbled around then sat. I was  startled  by a sudden beam of light. There before me sat an old woman wrapped in a flamboyant gown, a brightly coloured scarf wrapped around her hair. She gazed at me with piercing blue eyes, framed by clumsily applied black mascara. Her wrinkled features were caked in pale makeup, her mouth smothered in smudged red lipstick.
She held out her palm. Mesmerised, I placed a crisp five-pound note on it. She stuffed it down the front of her dress.

Staring at me, she turned a card from the pack on the table before her.‘The Eight of Swords’ she croaked without looking at it. ‘Your vision is blocked in every direction, there are dangers to be avoided. Escape seems impossible. Your troubles are closing in on you’

What? I was feeling on top of the world, everything going my way. I thought of asking for a refund but remembering where my money went I was worried she’d tell me to help myself to it.

I wanted to leave but I couldn't see the exit. The light went out. I tried to stand, tripped and fell to the floor...........

The end.

  1. Well you can't fault her fortune telling can you? Congratulations on the 1200th post. I checked to see how it read and was amazed that over that time you have managed to keep the same voice in your writing which I have failed to do.

  3. I'm about half way to that number, Keith. You've linked to last week's 6WS. This one hasn't appeared yet and I'm assuming it's due to anxiety :(

    1. Keep writing! It's amazing how the numbers add up. I linked to last week just in case - anxiety is probably too strong a word. Let's call it mild panic!
