More more!

Sunday’s Whirligig has offered us these words - mortuary, motor, many, midnight, mouths, mariachis (a Mexican street band), mutants, magician, meth, missed, more, maybe

I was midnight. In the arena, an expectant crowd sat on the edge of their seats as a crash of thunder and vivid flashing lights shattered the pitch darkness and eerie silence.  A single spotlight settled on a marble slab. A white-clad creature slowly sat up, then in a series of jerks turned its blood streaked grey face towards the open-mouthed onlookers. Gradually the stage illuminated to reveal a sombre cobweb-draped mortuary.

The menacing mutant dropped to its feet and with a flurry of its arms produced from nowhere a terrified scantily-clad maiden. He pointed a bony finger at her staring eyes, and she started spinning, slowly at first, then faster and faster and faster. Inch by inch she rose into the air. The swirling ceased and she flew across the stage landing with a thump against an upright circular board suspended in mid-air. She spread her arms and legs, and one by one clamps crashed closed around her limbs. A groaning motor began slowly turning the board.

The menacing beast pulled his hood over its eyes then produced from within its sleeves six steel blades which flashed in the dazzling beams of light.

In the pit before the stage, the mariachis produced a deafening onslaught of bellowing trumpets and ear-splitting drumbeats. Then a sudden silence, as the creature hurled the first of his weapons towards his terrified victim.

‘Missed’ roared the bloodthirsty spectators. ‘Missed’ they screamed again as another knife landed within a hair's breadth of her throat. ‘More, more’ they screeched.

The third missed; the fourth and fifth got closer. One more. Maybe this would be the fatal strike.

It pierced her chest and a torrent of crimson blood shot across the stage saturating her grinning executioner. The applauding audience leapt to its feet.

Minutes later, Marvin the Magician offered his assistant Martha a glass of wine in their dressing room. Red or white my dear? He asked. ‘White please’ she replied.
