Post 1613. Wednesday January 10
Friday Fictioneers
He suspends a silky thread from a corner of an open window. Crouching unseen, he patiently waits for a breath of breeze to carry it to the other side. It moves, and waves then floats up and across. Perfect.
Slowly, painstaking, he starts to weave his web. Round and round, up and down, in and out. Once done, he admires his work then awaits his unsuspecting prey. Minutes pass, more minutes still. Then from nowhere an unsuspecting insect flies into the web's sticky centre. Panic-stricken, it struggles to break free. Thrashing, spinning. But to no avail.

I wonder if I'm the only one who's attempted to release the prey from a spider's web? A graphic observation.
ReplyDeleteNo, you're not! I love spiders and will never disturb them unless I have to, but they do annoy me when they insist on snaring honey bees. I've tried to free a bee before, but to no avail.
DeleteI haven't but I might just try one day! Just hope I don't get trapped!
DeleteDear Keith,
ReplyDeleteBon Apetit,

DeleteThe best things come to those who wait :-)
ReplyDelete...and patience is a virtue!Thanks Iain.

DeleteA vivid tale of do or die Keith! The poor old spider has to eat after all. Nicely done
ReplyDeleteSo true.I wonder if there are any veggie spiders! Thanks Lynn
DeleteI suspect you like spiders and have watched their meticulous work many times?
ReplyDeleteThey fascinate me actually! I've taken so many photos of webs myself. Cheers liz.
DeleteWell, dinner is served.
ReplyDeleteIt certainly is! Thanks Susie
DeleteEverything has to eat, and i like spiders, especially that they eat all of the ugh bugs.
ReplyDeleteThey certainly have their uses! Cheers mimi
DeleteThe spiders can have all the bugs they want, as far as I'm concerned! Especially after taking all that time with the web, they deserve it.
ReplyDeleteThey certainly do Joy! Thank you.
DeleteSometimes a straight-to-the-point story is perfection. I loved this. I never disturb them either even when they have the annoying habit of building their web across my porch...
ReplyDeleteThat can be annoyng especially when you walk face-first into one! Thanks Dale
DeletePatience, as the say, is the greatest of virtues :-)
ReplyDeleteThey do indeed and so right they are! Thanks Anurag.
DeleteSuperbly written. I could totally imagine this

ReplyDeleteThanks, Norma.
Certainly not! Thanks for dropping by Norma.
DeleteI love your title, Keith. Wonderful! And, of course, i really like the way you have woven your story- the wonderful narration and the vivid imagery. Lovely!
ReplyDeleteHope the comment does go through this time. Had been trying to comment from my phone since yesterday till i decided to try from the laptop, just now.
It has definitely arrived! Thanks so much for your perseverance and your generous words moon.
DeleteAh ha .. is that what I must do to get dinner ... weave my web. Clever tale ... cheers Hilary
ReplyDeleteCanadian insects are very tasty Hilary!
DeleteI hope Mr. Fly hasn't been rolling in a cow pattie. That might leave a terrible aftertaste. - Russell
ReplyDeleteNot the tastiest kind of pattie that's for sure! Cheers Russell
DeleteYou made me think about the work that must go into weaving that web. Love the tone. :)
ReplyDeletePatience is a virtue! Thanks Sascha
DeleteWordsmith at its best.
ReplyDeleteThat's very kind of you YS, thank you.
DeleteI love your happy little spider beside the story. It sounds like you've been closely observing the operations of a spider. My dad taught me never to kill a spider. I watched one scare himself by looking in a mirror one time. It was hilarious. Not for him of course. Good writing, Keith. :D --- Suzanne
ReplyDeleteI'd love to have seen the spider and the mirror! Thanks so much for dropping by Suzanne.
DeleteIt's not only chefs who put a lot of work into preparing food. ;)
ReplyDeleteIndeed we are not although I did work fairly hard in my kitchen!
DeleteA lot of work, and a dinner is a just reward I think... yummy
ReplyDeleteA lot of effort for an insect or two! Cheers B.
DeleteDelightfully observed. It's summertime down under and if you are not careful you are bound to walk into a web these days.
ReplyDeleteIt's wintertime up above and I don't like it! Bring back the webs!
DeleteAwww ... I feel badly for the fly. But, that's nature. Surviaval of the fittest or smartest.
ReplyDeleteCool way to go with the take. I enjoyed it immensely. It could be a cute children's book.
'The Spider and the Fly' .... hehe
Isadora 😎
...now that's an idea! Thanks Isadora.
Deletei expect some trickery, but this time you just tell like it is. great post, anyway. :)
ReplyDeleteGlad you liked it, trickery or not! Cheers plaridel
DeleteSo that's how it's done! Better than slaving away over a hot stove :D
ReplyDeleteYou think? I'll stick to the stove! Cheers Dahlia
DeleteIt's a wonder there is not an old saying about the patience of a spider.
ReplyDeleteA very good point Dawn!
DeleteA reflective tale - even a fable perhaps ? Dinner/tasty flies come to those who wait? Is your spider super sized, like its web ?
ReplyDeleteIt's pretty large! Cheers.
DeletePatience is well rewarded. A good message here Keith
ReplyDeleteSo it is! Thank you.
DeleteI love how you set this one up. It made me smile.
ReplyDeleteJust as I hoped! Thanks Anne
