Friday Fictioneers

I’m on the ferry to France. Once there, I’ll hop off, partake of food and wine, then back on board to be home again by bedtime.

"Wake up sir we’re there"

I blink my eyes and survey a collection of empty glasses. "Someone’s had a drink or two!" I jest. Ooo-err, I feel a bit peculiar.

I've disembarked. It’s dark, how strange. I need a coffee, ah there's a cafe.

"Bonsoir monsieur, un café s'il vous plaît"

"What do mean you don’t speak French?' " I ask. "Très drôle! Dover? I’m back in England? Oh, mon dieu".

Seems I nodded off on the way there and slept ‘til the ferry got back!

"Merde" Pardon my French.

*In case you are not from my side of the pond, 'pardon my French' is commonly used here as an apology for swearing!

Thanks to  Rochelle for hosting and to Ted Strutz for the photo.

  11. We say 'pardon my French' where I live outside Detroit. I used to ride one of the city buses to the end of the line and would often worry about falling asleep and ending up back where I started.

  12. You sent me back on memory lane. As a teenager I visited England and used the ferry from Calais to Dover. I had never been or a ferry before and it impressed me deeply.

I remember there was bar on board, I can see how one could forget time and place. :-)

    Well done. Thank you!

    1. I use that route quite often when I fancy lunch in France. Trouble is I'm usually driving so I have to give the bar a miss! Time you came back and travelled on it again! Cheers LB.

  13. That can happen when you have a bit more than you thought you did. And i knew someone who once said "Pardon my French" and a lady standing nearby said, "I am French, and we don't talk that way!"

  17. On this side of the pond, one might nap right through a subway train stop, (though I wouldn't advise napping on a subway train. The only down side is you find yourself at the end of the line...and not a round trip! Nice story Keith.

    1. In London one of the lines goes in a circle, and some people deliberatley go round and round sleeping, because they have nowhere else to lay their head. Thanks for you comment Kat.

  21. Well done! (Except for the "French" finalé.) Here in Saskatchewan folks say, Pardon my French, too, de temps en temps. Désolée that you missed the trip. Sauce and sea don't mix. :)

Some folks miss it all when they zone out with ear buds and/or a cell phone. I'm apt to get engrossed in a book. We took a "Whale Watch Cruise out of Boston Harbor one day and I over-heard on young lady say, "I went out on one of these yesterday but spent the whole time looking through my camera lens. Today I'm going out again to actually see something."

    1. Sauce and sea don't mix - I must remember that one next time I take one of my day trips to France! So often I've been to fantastic events where people have viewed the entire thing through the lens of a video camera. Why? Cheers Christine
