To the woods!

The 12 given words at The Sunday Whirl are Full, ground, hour, buddy, sell, element, ability, theory, demon, gear, lane and trees.

A buddy of mine, Brian claimed he had the ability to see demons in the woods at the bottom of his lane. Not the nasty type, more the mischievous sprite variety. He had this theory that they are there to keep the creatures of the undergrowth on their toes by playing practical jokes on them!

I thought he was either weird upstairs or simply kidding! So I challenged him. Take me to see one I said.

He told me I needed the right gear and took me to a shop where they sell penny whistles. Then he got me to dress all in black and even wear a balaclava helmet! All I needed was a swag bag and I could have started a new career as a burgling pied piper! I asked why he wasn’t dressed like me and he explained that they knew him, but as they were frightened of strangers I needed to be invisible in the darkness.

At the midnight hour, Brian and I braved the elements, and as per my instructions I sat cross-legged on the ground blowing my whistle. A few minutes later I realised Brian had disappeared.

Imagine my surprise when I suddenly saw three white-faced creatures crawling towards me from between the trees. They started bombarding me with pine cones. I froze!

I admit that as practical jokes go it was a pretty good one. But it cost Brian Paul and Simon a pint each in the pub the next night!

  1. Some friends can be annoyingly persuasive - at least it ended with a pint however - could be far worse!

  4. I am pretty sure you had been to the pub earlier to fall for that one. There was quite a trend for similar practical jokes a few years ago; I wonder if they still happen?

  5. As practical jokes go, this one was great, especially as it ended in a pint.
