.

This Week's words at 3 Word Wednesday are placid, quirky and nondescript .

Peter

Peter is a quiet soul. Polite, he is of the generation that doffs their caps and offers their seat to ladies. He is never the one to stand out in a crowd. His placid manner and nondescript features render him near invisible. If he has any quirky traits, they are kept behind closed doors, but that seems highly unlikely.

Maureen was a sweet soul. Everybody loved Maureen. Star jam-maker at the Women’s Institute, a side’s person at the church. Saturday afternoon she was standing in the high street selling poppies to those wishing to remember the fallen of war.

Peter rarely goes out after dark. He prefers his slippers, a cup of tea and Eastenders on the TV. No one saw him slip out of his cottage late Saturday evening.

Maureen left the church hall after the prayer group meeting finished. She didn’t like those dark evenings, but her friends were important to her and Saturday evenings were the highlight of her week.

Peter is sitting on a pew at the rear of the church. He knows few people at Maureen’s funeral, but something drew him here. He heard that she was found late on All Hallows Eve by the roadside, ghostly white, startled eyes bulging and two piercings in her neck.

Peter’s has no memory of the task he carried out that night. He remembers nothing of missions past, and will know nothing those still to come. Nevertheless, come they will. Next year, and the year after.........

  2. Very eerie! I liked the switches in tense and how it wove together. Good one for Halloween.

    1. Hi Nick. I wondered if the different tenses would work or even if anyone would notice! Thanks for dropping in.

  3. Now here's a story with real bite. One must assume that Peter thinks any blood on his collar was where he cut himself shaving. Great story for the week-end.

  4. If cursed with immortality it's probably best not to remember the night before..i'm surprised his feet weren't a bit hot in church however...a suitably ghoulish tale and a spooky banner....had me scared ;)
