The Dancer

Participating in Blogging  A-Z April Challenge
There are 1862 writers taking part

It's Day 4 of  Blogging from A to Z  April 2015 Challenge

Little Felicity’s father was slouched in a chair flicking aimlessly from channel to channel on the TV, when his search was interrupted by a phone call. He swore and slammed down his beer.  Felicity screwed closed her eyes and held her hands over her ears. But she could still make out her father ranting in the background.

Suddenly she heard soft and gentle music. She relaxed a little and there on the screen a vision in purest white swirled, spun, jumped; almost flew. She had porcelain features, a doll like body and feathers on her costume. When she leapt in the air she was caught in the arms of a handsome prince.

Too soon her father returned and after making obscene remarks about the dancers, started switching channels again.

In the following years Felicity was passed from one foster home to another. She created trouble wherever she went. She became uncontrollable and ended up in a secure facility.

But in rare quiet moments her mind would return to the swan she saw too briefly on the television that day.

Six years passed and Felicity sorted herself out. She is a dancer now. Every night she performs to an appreciative audience.

But for now, the only thing on stage with her is a shiny chrome pole. She doesn’t wear a pink tutu; in fact she doesn’t wear much at all. But it pays well, especially when she does her private performances off stage.

And everything she earns pays for her daily lessons at the Dance Academy.

She will achieve her dream. One day she will be a swan.

A little bit of humour tomorrow when my short story will be The Entertainer

  2. I love the ups and downs in this piece. First I was relieved when she becomes a dancer, then horrified at what kind of dancer, and then relieved that she is still working towards her ballet dream. Great piece.
