A short story inspired by this week's picture at Sunday Photo Fiction

As I wandered along the deserted street I had nothing but my shadow for company. The only sound to break the silence was that of my laboured footsteps. I felt alone in the world as though no-one else existed. Until that is I came upon an apartment block, its windows aglow with light. For as I passed the first, I heard the outpouring of jolly laughter and the pop of a cork. I felt a pang of envy for the merriment within. From the second window came the sweet sound of a violin. I paused to take in the melody that floated down and swirled around, wrapping me in a comforting blanket of mellow music. I had a smile on my face as I approached the third. Wondering what I would hear I stopped hoping for something to further raise my spirits. Instead, I heard a spine-chilling scream and frantic shouting. In the open window, I noticed somebody turn and stare in my direction. There was a sudden explosion of gunfire. Then everything fell silent.

    Well done.
Fiction often mimics real life. I can see the headline news now!
