Henrietta

Little Henrietta was so sweeeeet! Big blue eyes, chubby pink cheeks and a teeny weeny button nose.  She also had a very special talent. She didn't know it was special; it was just something she did.

If she wiggled her nose at a bud, it would turn into a beautiful flower. If she frowned at an ugly slug it would slither off as fast as its slime could carry it.  If she smiled at a spider, it would sit down beside her.

One summer’s day Mummy and Daddy held a barbecue. Daddy was cooking sausages and things on a fire in a big tin box, and there were lots of grownups there talking and laughing and being silly.

Henrietta was crawling around amusing herself. No one noticed as she winked at a bumble bee and it looped the loop. Or when she wiggled her tongue at a worm and it stood on its tail!

It started getting darker and suddenly there was a flash and a scary rumbling noise. Daddy looked up at the stormy sky and frowned.

Uncle Gilbert shook the pepper pot over his plate of food. Some of it missed and landed on Henrietta's nose! She sneezed the biggest little sneeze she’d ever sneezed! Suddenly the black clouds scattered in lots of different directions and the sun beamed down from a bright blue sky.

Henrietta squinted at the sun and grinned. The sun smiled at Henrietta and winked!

Tomorrow I'll be posting a gentle 100 word vignette entitled The Island

  4. Hi, I am one of Lisa's Live Wires helping in the A to Z Challenge...this is such a cute story. Reminded me a bit of Samantha from "Bewitched"...like someone was writing what she was like as a child. I taught preschool and this is the sort of story the kids would love, then you get to see them acting it out! Thanks for posting!

  8. Fabulous ficlet! It made me smile, especially to imagine a worm dancing on its tail. Thank you for sharing. Oh, and it looks like my personal blog is number 1307 on the A to Z list today (I understand we're supposed to share that in comments ~grin~). I appreciate your visit to the Writer's Retreat Blog!

    1. Thanks so much number 1307! I'd forgotten about the number thing. Never mind. I'm not actually sure worms strictly speaking have tails - they are like one big tail with a mouth but I think I got away with it!
