Every Sunday the faithful few
go to church to sit in a pew
And sing some hymns and listen to words
from a man in a frock
looking down on his flock
Hands in the air they shout hooray
Down on their knees they start to pray
Ask for this, give thanks for that
Then up again
and yell amen!
Kneeling down, standing up
eat some bread, communion cup
Read the good book and hold hands high
The faithful few
are praying for you
.

Love the jaunty tone in this! Made me smile!

Ha! Perfect description, especially, "looking down on his flock." And I'm assuming you meant that in all ways it could be meant.
ReplyDeleteThe last two lines kind of relieved me ! ;)
ReplyDeleteThe poem had a lovely animated sense of motion to it .
I like the rhythm and the latent cheekiness.
ReplyDeleteLoved this. My wife's a practicing Christian. I'll have to get her to ask the vicar if they can sing it instead of a hymn :-)
ReplyDeleteI am no practising Hindu. I felt amused at times, watching people go to temples in blind faith. Maybe they are better off!
ReplyDeletefaithfully fantasizing
This was a fun read and also had much truth in it. I know quite a few of the 'faithful' and sometimes although their sincerity seems to be lacking on a day to day basis; they do find the zest and determination to 'strut their stuff' when it comes to praying and church-going. Well done Keith.
ReplyDeletePS: Not to be nit-picky but language is misspelled in your sidebar, re: language choices.

It works for some, and who knows?... Others may be better off for it. Humour with a message.
ReplyDeleteNicely done. I loved the line "looking down on his flock" Brings me back to my church past.
ReplyDeleteVery well said. Amen and may they continue to pray.
ReplyDeleteHey there hope all is well I am here
ReplyDeleteExcellent. I hope they are praying for me. I need all the help I can get.
ReplyDeleteKeith,
ReplyDeleteIf attending mass is the measure to be counted as one of the faithful few, I would be out. I work long hours during weekends so gone are the days when I was a regular sunday mass goer. I keep my faith alive by whispering little prayers everyday, and I think doing little good deeds would keep me close to my God even with my long absence to sunday masses.
I thank the faithful few for their prayers, my family back in the Philippines offer prayers for me on sundays. I thought these are the reasons why I'm blessed with a job and good health even while away from home and the church.
I wish you well.
