In the covert

Here in the thicket he feels safe
Yet afraid to breathe, scared to stir less he be heard
The fox crouches in the gently swaying grass
Watching, eyes unblinking, ears searching for sounds
Listening for the thunderous beating of horses hooves
Watching for the scarlet of the huntsmen’s coats
Awaiting the wail of bugles, the panting of hounds
Should he stay, should he dash, should he run for ground?
But for now the covert protects him, hides him
Here in the thicket he feels safe

  2. Aw. I'm on the side of the fox too.
It's a good poem though, and expresses the picture well.

  11. Keith, I distinctly remembering reading a comment from you that you do not understand poetry. You may not understand it, but you sure the hell can write it. I understand that that they do not not kill the foxes any more. Is that true?

  16. Nice imagery. I'm always on the side of the fox. How they can call it a sport with a bunch of grown people with guns and dogs and horses against one poor little fox is beyond me.
