Just another day

'

'

I pull back my curtains, it’s the start of the day. A silvery sun is shimmering above a motionless sea in the early morning sky, a sky of palest blue smudged with clouds of baby pink.

Outside my window a rose has opened. It wasn’t there yesterday. It’s the first of the year, its pink petals unfurling, bobbing in a breeze as gentle as a baby’s breath. A handful of cherry blossom petals flutter down from above.

I turn on my radio. A song wafts me back to a time when love filled my life. I close my eyes and we dance round and round, slowly, as if floating on a cushion of air. I whisper the words in her ear. ‘You are so beautiful, to me’. But it’s all in my mind. Just a distant memory.

A boy and girl walk hand in hand past my door. They slow, then smile at each other. They stop then embrace, just for a second, then walk on.

A postman is struggling up the hill, hunched, with a bulging bag on his back. A bag fuller than usual, stuffed with pink envelopes and anonymous messages of love.

He waves.

He passes me by.

It's just another day.

  2. You really captured the essence of being single on Valentine's Day. I personally hate this holiday (even though I'm married) and we intend to boycott it. No heart-shaped boxes of candy for us! Though I'm crossing my fingers for extra computer time--you know, just 'cause he loves me. :-)

  3. This was a very poignant story- lovely! My husband refuses to celebrate Valentine's day - he says it's too commercial, but as he buys me flowers often and tells me he loves me, I'm happy!

I have tagged you for a meme. I'm hoping that you have a very long middle name, I'd love to see what you do with this!

  7. Indeed, Keith, indeed.

It's just another day for me, too. I've celebrated valentines this way for as long as I can remember and I have no complaints - its just the way it is for me.

I almost celebrated valentines in 2003 the way it should be celebrated - but fate was not kind to me, days before the hearts' day my dream valentine's day just became impossible and it is the same the way it was before - just another day - until now.

I think there are still other reasons to be happy today.

    So, I am still happy.

    Happy Valentines Day!

    I wish you well.

  12. Love this post. And thanks for your comment on my post about my daughter and how she's changed. I pray it's only a phase, but she is the rebellious type.
